Revisión de los Oilbrushers - Review of the Oilbrushers

Introduction

Note: if you do not want to read the antecedents of this entry you can go directly to the section: Product testing.

I am an eventual modeler, that is, due to work, family, etc. I can not devote time to modeling regularly every week. I usually use the products every two to three months.

Yesterday I tried to start the weathering stage of my Merkava siman II by using oils. As I went to open my fine arts oils to start painting, I found that the tube plugs had stuck together and there was no way to open them. The usual tricks (a little heat, etc.) did not work, so I used pliers to try to open them. The result was that the tube was split by spreading its contents on the table and in the back of the chassis of the model. Fortunately, the model had a layer of acrylic matt varnish and I was able to clean the mess with ease.

The result was that what should have been a pleasant modeling session became a nightmare due to a poor quality product.

In the "Supermercado del Juguete", a very well stocked shop of modeling in Granada, have for several months products of Ammo by Mig Jiménez, in particular they have the Oilbrushers. Until yesterday, I had not thought to buy them, but the incident with the tubes of oil took me to try them.

This morning I went to the store and bought the colors I thought were more appropriate for modeling. Immediately I have put with them.

Product Testing

The first thing that stands out is that the colors are ideal for modeling. All the tones necessary to make dust effects on the tanks are available.

When you open them for the first time, it looks like the paint is a bit liquid. I use the dry-melt technique, so I do not think I'm going to work well. Nonetheless I still give them a chance. The result pleasantly surprises me. They are perfect for the dry-melt technique. They blend with each other much better than the fine art oils I used up to now, melt in a much more controllable way and allow much more subtle and controlled effects. Simply fantastic.

I used the applicator just to deposit the oil dots in the model, then I use my specific brushes to melt: one of short and hard bristles (for the first phase) and another of long and soft bristles (for the second phase). It has been very easy to control. In fact I have not noticed a difference between using the Oilbrusher applicator and using a normal brush.

In short, I have spent a great morning of modeling, worrying only about the effect I want to achieve and not whether the damn oil will open or not, or if it will be dry or not. It will be necessary to see if within three months, when it comes back to use they continue to offer the same performance as now, only time will tell.

Personal valuation:

In my opinion, the Oilbrushers from Ammo by MIG Jimenez are highly recommended:
  • The product is of superior quality. The best I have tried so far.
  • The colors are perfect for modeling, which saves you unnecessary headaches.
  • The packaging is very comfortable to work, you do not end with the brushes, fingers, clothes, etc. filled with oil painting. Very clean and easy.
  • They adapt perfectly to the way I work. That makes me go faster and focus on what matters: the effect I try to get.
I do not know if they are a revolution or not, but there is no doubt that my modeling life is a lot easier now.

  2. Hola.

    Muchas gracias por tu comentario.

    He usado las siguientes referencias:

    Fran.
